9/3/15 - A Whole Bunch of Awesomeness

I cannot wait to get out and test this bad boy out! Now, to disassemble the 300 BLK upper and add the new longer hand guard to cover the extra length. The Mystic X adds approximately 13oz to the package with the appropriate adapter/booster attached. More details and pictures to follow.

9/2/15 - APPROVED!

Need I say more????? It has been a crazy summer full of busy work and a couple of family trips, all of which have kept me from writing much here.

Yesterday I called the ATF again and lo and behold, my transfer was finally approved on 8/10/15. My dealer just got my paperwork a couple of days ago so finally....finally....finally I am able to go pick it up today. It only took 302 days! It would have been much sooner if I didn't have to have it transferred from Georgia, but that doesn't matter any more. I cannot wait until after work tonight :)

7/27/15 - ATF status pending

Today I took the initiative and called the NFA hotline and finally got through to a cordial ATF customer service representative who informed me that my transfer status had changed to pending in the middle of April this year, and that current processing times are approximately five months from that date. So now I await the middle of September!

I'm glad I called because I found some relief to my anxiety. Nevertheless, this is taking way too long, since I ordered the can at the beginning of November.

7/23/15 - Back from vacation

It has been a while since I checked anything because my family was away on vacation. Today I checked www.nfatracker.com and lo and behold, another approval showed up for WA state.

- Purchased 3/13, Pending 3/19, Approval 7/17

Does this mean that approvals have resumed for suppressors? I still have not received any further notification regarding my approval.

7/6/15 - ***More NFA approval updates***

Apparently some low-level employee at the WA Department of Licensing called the ATF about the SBR law, and this is what is causing the hold-up. This employee was not allowed to "direct policy on behalf of Washington State." He acted out of authority and hopefully he will be dealt with accordingly.

Nevertheless, the ATF and the WA DOL are both pointing fingers at each other, stating that the decision to place approvals on hold came from the other party. See below:

We are waiting now because some idiot decided to interpret the law without the authority to do so. The original sponsor of the bill, Democratic Representative Brian Blake of the WA 19th District, is working with the NRA, the DOL Firearms division head, and the ATF to get this corrected.

Please hurry up. My patience is growing thin....

7/3/15 - ***Suppressor transfer approval UPDATE***

I frequently check www.nfatracker.com for updates that are uploaded by account holders regarding their NFA transfers. One great thing about this website is that you can download all of the data as an Excel spreadsheet and filter it.

Accordingly, today I visited the site again to check, and lo and behold, there was an approval after 5/28:

  • - AAC Element; F4 trust; Purchase: 2/23/15; Forms sent same day; Forms received: 2/26/15; approved: 6/25/15; Stamp received: 6/29/15; Examiner name: Christina Farris; ID#99.

I hope this is true. My paperwork was sent in the week before hers so hopefully I can get an approval here soon. :)

6/26/15 - WA Suppressor form 1/4 approval delays due to SBR legislation

Recently I began wondering exactly about when my form 4 will be approved (how many of you have been in that boat?), so I made and inquiry via text messaging to my dealer. Not too long thereafter, I received an answer, but it was not the one I was craving.

I was told the approval of all forms 1 and forms 4 in WA state are being postponed until the ATF's legal team has a chance to "examine" the laws. This is due to the differences between WA state legislature and federal laws regarding the word "acquire" when applied to making/manufacturing short-barreled rifles (SBRs) inside of WA state.

I attempted to do a little research on the internet, specifically about when approvals will resume. However, there are very few articles written currently. My dealer told me he had heard a rumor so he called the ATF and asked them. Besides that, all I could find was this article from TTAG:

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2015/05/foghorn/breaking-atf-begins-denying-nfa-paperwork-for-washington-state-residents/

Suppressors have nothing to do with SBRs, so why are they (the ATF) halting suppressor approvals? As of today, at www.nfatracker.com, the last WA suppressor form 4 approval (reported) was May 24, 2015. If anyone has any additional "insider" information please feel free to forward it to me at james@toughrunguns.com. I am overly anxious for my approval to go through.

6/10/15 - NFA Trusts Under Attack?

Source: www.nwgunlawgroup.com

Recently in the news there has been quite the bad rap about people skirting firearms transfer laws by setting up trusts. [Cue article: http://blogs.findlaw.com/strategist/2015/04/gun-trusts-valuable-estate-planning-tool-or-doomed-loophole.html. I won't go and repost everything that has already been spoken of here, but I feel the need to express my perspective on this issue as both a client of the law group above and as a firearms owner in general.

Approximately three years ago, Washington State jumped on the bandwagon and passed HB 1016, which permitted the use of suppressors on firearms, as long as they are used in compliance with federal law. As a side note, last year Washington legislature also passed SB 5956, which permitted the possession of short-barreled rifles (SBR). This gave me hope that maybe the tides were changing, at least in my state.

I was ecstatic to find out that I could now use NFA items in my state. Sadly, I live in King County, which is overpopulated with liberal folks and not-so-lenient law enforcement. However, transfer approvals for suppressors and SBRs to individuals require signoff by one's local chief law enforcement officer (CLEO). These items are already heavily regulated by the National Firearms Act (NFA), and require a lengthy and expensive process to acquire, and therefore, use.

Last year, Initiative 594 hit the voter docket and ultimately made it to the ballot. I-594, a poorly written piece of legislature, attempted to define and control/limit firearms transfers in Washington State through the idea of universal background checks. This proposed legislation was also very heavily financed and backed by big anti-gun celebrities including Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg. WA state voters ultimately were duped and allowed this monstrosity to pass.

After much research, I attended a seminar at I-5 Guns and Ammo near Olympia and hosted by Mr. Dennis Brislawn, of the Northwest Gun Law Group. After its completion, I officially became the Grantor of my very own NFA gun trust- a Silver version of the Gundocx machine. As expected, since the advent of I-594, gun trust sales have skyrocketed, and of course, the [mostly anti-gun] media noticed. As a shout out (and thank you) to Mr. Brislawn and his company, he typically organizes a few events a year at different locations, and because he can gather many people together, he discounts his products by approximately 20% (mine was $400 instead of the normal $500). His Silver trust is phenomenal and I am extremely pleased with my choice. He also offers extended support with this trust.

There are a few key factors that I considered when choosing to set up my trust. The most important was the ability to purchase NFA items as trust assets without the need for CLEO approval beforehand, since a trust doesn't have fingerprints or a face to photograph.

Secondly, my trust contains wording that lets ME create trustees/beneficiaries at my choosing, as long as they comply with the trustee requirements of state law and I CAN TRUST THEM. This means that the NFA assets that I purchase for the trust can be used by more individuals than just myself, as would be the case in an individual transfer. Trustees currently do not need background checks as of now. However, please note the proposed ATF rule changes at the following web link: http://www.reginfo.gov/public/do/eAgendaViewRule?pubId=201210&RIN=1140-AA43). This is the big sticking point for liberal media clowns. The single positive outcome of the proposed changes would be the removal of CLEO pre-certification. Notwithstanding, copies of any transfer's paperwork would still need to be mailed to the CLEO.

Thirdly, there is specific wording that controls what happens to the trust's assets should something happen to me. This is to avoid any accidental transfers/felonies, especially upon my death or incapacitation.

The media does not care about the positive benefits of trusts, nor do they care about citizens' Second Amendment rights. They portray all trust owners as criminals who avoid Washington's mandate for universal background checks. Unfortunately, I can foresee some people abusing this opportunity and ruining it for everyone, similar to what happened with the SB15 pistol stabilizing brace.

5/09/15 - 4 hours of range time

C Range at CSF.

My wife stopped working on Saturdays so I was finally able to get out and throw some lead downrange with family. We had beautiful weather, and, although the only available centerfire range (the other had a shotgun event scheduled for the same time period) was signed up for a mandatory bi-monthly public shoot from 10am - 3pm, we only had a few other people show up. The only annoyance was having two RSOs running the show, as opposed to the first club member showing up taking charge, but it actually worked out for the better because we were all able to shoot at the same time. Typically club members are required to be in control of their guests and therefore can't shoot while visitors are firing.

I was able to try out my grandpa's Remington 30-06 for the first time since my dad gave it to me last year. Being an original Remington Model 721, it still has the safety issue with the trigger misfiring once you release the safety sometimes. I will eventually need to get the trigger mechanism worked on. In the meantime, I just loaded one round at a time.

I had been told that the gun/scope was accurate even though it was just a basic scope with standard crosshairs. The first shot was slightly off, being my first time with this "new" firearm. Fortunately, my next shot put the projectile in the top of the bullseye. Unfortunately, however, I did not get any pictures, as my phone was practically dead by this time. It is nice to see it hold true after all these years.

We also got to try out my youngest brother's new Beretta CX-4 Storm carbine in 9mm. It had a surprisingly long trigger pull, to the point of initially wondering if the safety was still engaged. The lack of recoil was impressive though, as well as the lack of the noise from both the action and from the round exiting the muzzle. It was considerably quieter than I expected, and made for a very nice and solid shoot while remaining fairly accurate at 25-50yds with iron sights.

We were able to get a few other rifles sighted in at 100yds as well. All in all, it was a great day to be outside and enjoy the weather, and especially being able to shoot.

4/24/15 - Ordering online and shipping concerns

My respect for Primary Arms, FEDEX and Liberty Suppressors has grown considerably over the last few weeks. However, my frustration with the United States Postal Service also increased.

I had been waiting for what seemed like months for a scope to mount on top of my 300 BLK pistol upper. I previously decided on Texas-based Primary Arms' 1-6x scope with the 300 BLK A.C.S.S reticle, but it was out-of-stock and had been for quite some time, with an estimated availability date near the end of March.

True to their word, a couple of weeks ago I received the blessed email notification from Primary Arms that the 1-6x scopes were back in stock, and I jumped- no, flew- immediately on that horse and made the purchase. I'm glad I did because they sold out again in about a week.

Primary Arms promptly threw the package out the door and emailed me the tracking information: a FEDEX shipment that would be delivered by the end of the week. Needless to say, the excellent customer service and processing/handling of this order was in line with my past transactions involving PA, and FEDEX even beat its expected delivery date by one day, much to my rejoicing.

I have also received excellent customer service from Liberty Suppressors, located in Trenton, GA. They have provided me with whatever information was needed regarding NFA purchases, wait times and shipment dates, and whatever else I have requested of them in relation to my pending transfer.

I am slightly neurotic about tracking shipments for purchases that I make online. I like them to be brought inside as soon as they are delivered, especially when they are just left on my front porch. My neighborhood is not the nicest one around.

Recently, I placed an order at Liberty's online shop for my last two suppressor mounts (for now). Within two days it had been processed, shipped and scheduled for delivery on the following Monday via the United States Postal Service. I was ecstatic to finally be ready for my NFA transfer approval in a couple of months.

On Monday, as expected, the USPS app on my phone noted that the shipment was out for delivery that day. My mail is typically delivered in the early to late afternoon. Around 2:30pm I realized that I needed to make a quick run to the local hardware store, and I decided to take the chance and go.

Of course, while I was away, the package was dropped off. As soon as I saw the status update to "Delivered" on my cell phone, I immediately drove home. Unfortunately, there was no package outside my door, nor had there been one received by my wife. Later that evening, the delivery status was again updated, this time saying that it had been left on the front porch. I contacted Liberty to make them aware in case it didn't show up.

My package eventually made its way back to me the next day. As I suspected, it had been accidentally delivered to the wrong address somewhere else. Fortunately, whoever received it off their porch was kind enough to send it back to me. It makes me wonder sometimes....
